Does temperature significantly affect the storage stability of silicone defoamers?
Yes, it has a significant impact. High temperatures accelerate the cross-linking of silicone oil and the destabilization (demulsification) of the emulsion; conversely, low temperatures or repeated freeze-thaw cycles can also damage the product’s structure. It is generally recommended to store the product in a cool place at a temperature between 10°C and 30°C.
Can poor packaging seals cause the defoamer to become ineffective?
Yes. Poor sealing allows moisture to enter or solvents to evaporate easily. This can lead to emulsion stratification, oxidation, or changes in consistency, thereby compromising the product’s performance.
Can I simply increase the dosage to continue using a defoamer that has been stored for a long time?
We do not recommend blindly increasing the dosage. If you observe obvious stratification, clumping, or abnormal viscosity, it indicates that the product has partially lost its efficacy. Attempting to compensate by simply increasing the dosage may not only fail to eliminate the foam but could actually worsen the foaming issue.
Do silicone defoamers have a shelf life? Can they still be used after they expire?
Generally, the shelf life is between 6 and 12 months. After expiration, even if the product’s appearance remains normal, the active ingredients may have degraded. It is recommended to use the product before its expiration date and to prioritize inventory management using the “First-In, First-Out” (FIFO) principle.

Check for signs of stratification, clumping, oil-water separation, or significant thickening. If the product remains non-uniform even after gentle stirring—or if a small-scale field test reveals a significantly slower defoaming rate or a shorter foam-suppression duration—it indicates that the product has partially lost its efficacy.
